Katie Couric is leaving her full-time post at Yahoo, and is also departing CAA for WME.
The journalist had been global anchor for Yahoo News — a position created for her in 2013. She re-upped with a $10 million deal in 2015, the same year she became a special contributor for ABC News as part of an expanded partnership between the two companies. Rather than extending her contract with Yahoo parent company Oath, Couric has struck a pact to work with the Verizon subsidiary on a project basis.
“I’m very proud of my time at Yahoo anchoring live events, political coverage and breaking news with a team of very talented journalists,” Couric said Friday in a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter. “Over the past three years, we have produced a wide range of high-quality video content that was delivered to millions of viewers. I learned some valuable lessons during my tenure, which I will take with me as I continue to create, develop and produce a variety of content for different platforms in this constantly evolving landscape.”
Couric has been active as a producer with multiple outlets, including developing Netflix’s Unbelievable, a scripted drama based on the Pulitzer-winning ProPublica article “An Unbelievable Story of Rape” and produced by CBS TV Studios; National Geographic’s upcoming six-part docuseries follow-up to her special Gender Revolution: A Journey With Katie Couric earlier this year; and FYI’s Scraps, a cooking and travel show hosted by chef Joel Gamoran. Couric herself is featured with husband John Molner on the cooking web series Full Plate With Katie & John, and she continues to host an eponymous podcast featuring leaders in news, politics and pop culture as guests, including Alec Baldwin, Samantha Bee, Nate Silver, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Minnesota Sen. Al Franken.
Couric’s interviews for Yahoo have generated almost 1 billion views, topped by her December 2016 exclusive with Edward Snowden, which has been seen by more than 20 million people across the platform, social media and producing partner ABC News. Her live coverage of Election Day 2016 received 16.6 million views, and 13.4 million tuned in to her live coverage of Donald Trump’s inauguration in January.
Couric rose to national prominence after she joined NBC in 1989, rising from political correspondent to host of Today, a position she held until 2006, when she moved to the CBS Evening News to become the first solo female anchor of a nightly news broadcast on one of the Big Three networks. After five years, she joined ABC News as a special correspondent and also hosted daytime talk show Katie from 2012 to 2014.
Couric had been with CAA since 2001, when she followed longtime agent Alan Berger from Artists Management Group. The professional split was amicable, a rep confirmed to THR.
