Study: 64% of iPhone Users Watch Video on Phones
29 Jun, 2011 By: Erik GruenwedelA new report says 64% of iPhone (and 32% of smartphone) users watch video streams with almost the same frequency as downloading apps.
London-based Futuresource Consulting said user-generated content continues to account for the majority of video watched via mobile devices, although increasing numbers of users also are viewing movie clips, trailers and music videos.
In a study of 2,500 respondents older than 12 years old, Facebook was found to be key to driving mobile Web usage and video consumption, ahead of Google and YouTube — the latter trailing to the BBC in United Kingdom with 44% smartphone penetration.
Separately, apps that help users maximize their smartphones functionality for myriad uses topped 10 billion in 2010 and generated $4 billion in revenue, according to the report.
“With over 25% of smartphone owners in the U.K. and U.S. downloading apps to their phones, this market will continue to thrive,” said Alison Casey, author of the report. “Gaming is the main driver for app downloads, across all four territories and 65% of smartphone owners regularly playing games on their phones.”
Indeed, more than 40% users download social networking apps.
“Apps for smartphones and tablets continue to offer significant opportunities for promoting and monetizing games, books, movie and TV content,” Casey said. “Although the market is in its early stages, tablets will become the portable device for entertainment in the future, generating a new breed of applications and services that will breath additional life into this already lucrative market segment.”
