As Verizon Communications Inc. VZ -0.59%decrease; red down pointing triangle was working to close a $130 billion deal to take full control of Verizon Wireless, it was another, much smaller acquisition that CEO Lowell McAdam was saying privately would be revolutionary.

Soon, his prediction will be put to the test.
